Mission Statement
FORMIST is a national information literacy resource for instructors, both teachers and librarians. The first objective of FORMIST is to collect and organize educational tools and provide them on the French-speaking web site noted above for instructors and students. FORMIST also coordinates an information instructors' network, through conferences, workshops, and instructing future librarians in teaching skills. FORMIST also promotes French interests in a wider international context by participating in the European Network on Information Literacy (EnIL) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

Organizational Background/Description
Information literacy has acquired a significant position in the panorama of French universities over the past 10 years. It is a very structured organization, receiving substantial state support. FORMIST was created in 1997 as a result of increased awareness about information literacy training as an important strategic issue for French university libraries and information services.

The office in charge of libraries at the Ministry of Education created FORMIST in the French national Library and Information Science (LIS) School, with the focus on improved availability of information literacy resources. Two librarians are working in FORMIST. A Publishing and Executive Committee of 14 experts validates the documents on the web site. This committee also participates in developing an annual conference, Rencontres FORMIST.

Being in a LIS school ensures that the librarians who coordinate FORMIST are involved in pedagogy. Along with training future librarians as instructors, they also tutor them on essays and research papers.

FORMIST will be launching a new web site by the end of 2004.Information Literacy Goals, Areas of Interest, Publications, Standards, etc. The main goal of FORMIST is to serve as a national, French-speaking reference in information literacy for instructors, both teachers and librarians. This involves keeping up with information literacy news through articles, web sites, and personal contacts, as well as getting involved in international networks in order to present the state of the art information literacy in France and learning about information literacy projects elsewhere to pass them on to French-speaking instructors.
