Mission Statement
U sing its strengths in educational media design, development and evaluation, Creative Media Solutions offers services and products that strive to motivate learning and foster information literacy in children and adults.

Organizational Background/Description
CMS is a full-service electronic media production company specializing in educational media. Services include concept development; instructional design consulting, development and evaluation; motivational design; project management; and video pre-production, production, and post-production. Products include both broadcast and non-broadcast materials for educators and children.

Information Literacy Goals, Areas of Interest, Publications, Standards, etc.:
  • A primary goal of CMS is to develop products and services that foster information literacy. The U.S. Department of Education funded CMS to conduct the front-end analysis and proof-of-concept prototype for S.O.S. for Information Literacy, a web-based multimedia resource for educators to enhance information literacy instruction (Small Business Innovation Research Phase I award, 2001-2002). CMS subsequently turned over the results of the Phase I research to Syracuse University for continued funding efforts and development. The project is now in full scale development made possible by a National Leadership grant to Syracuse University's Center for Digital Literacy from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

  • "The Strangest Dinosaur That Never Was" is a children's book and educator's guide for introducing evaluation skills to children in grades 1-3 that is the result of a co-venture between CMS and Libraries Unlimited (2003).

  • "The Curious Kids and the Squiggly Question: A Storybook Approach to Introducing Research Skills" is a children's book and educator's guide for introducing information literacy skills for the beginning stage of the research process (e.g., defining the big question, narrowing the topic, making a plan for locating information, etc.), published in 2005.

  • "The Curious Kids: Digging for Answers" is a children's book and educator's guide that addresses information literacy skills that are used in the "during" phase of research (locating, collection, etc.), published in 2006.
  • CMS is currently developing a book and educator's guide for Libraries Unlimited which addresses the information literacy skill of presenting information. It will also include an educator's guide.

  • CMS principal, Dr. Marilyn Arnone, has co-authored several books which foster information literacy skills including "Turning Kids On To Research: The Power of Motivation" with Dr. Ruth Small (published by Libraries Unlimited).

  • Other areas of interest for the company include developing "I'm Curious" videos that stimulate curiosity in children across a variety of subject areas (3 - 5 minute discussion starters for classroom teachers and library media specialists) and "Young Researcher" videos in which real kids model the research process.
