Mission Statement
The National Council of Teachers of English promotes the development of literacy, the use of language to construct personal and public worlds and to achieve full participation in society, through the learning and teaching of English and the related arts and sciences of language.

Organizational Background/Description

NCTE provides career-long professional development for teachers that speaks to local challenges and is based on solid evidence from real classrooms. The association works to improve assessment systems so that authentic student learning is measured fairly and promotes continued student growth and engagement. NCTE supports English language learners so that they enjoy the richness of reading and writing in at least two languages. The association helps teachers and students use a variety of media to make meaning. It conducts research on evolving literacy practices that improve student learning and makes findings accessible for teachers, educational institutions, policy makers, and the public. Through alliances and partnerships, NCTE seeks to have an impact on national and international policies about literacy education.

Research and Publications
The Squire Office of Policy Research does research that informs NCTE proactive initiatives. NCTE has a research program for members conducting important research in the field. An array of publications from newsletters to journals to books are described on the NCTE Web site at http://www.ncte.org.
