Mission Statement
NGA provides governors and their senior staff members with services that range from
representing states on Capitol Hill and before the Administration on key federal issues to
developing policy reports on innovative state programs and hosting networking seminars for
state government executive branch officials. The NGA Center for Best Practices focuses on state
innovations and best practices on issues that range from education and health to technology,
welfare reform, and the environment. NGA also provides management and technical assistance to
both new and incumbent governors.
Organizational Background/Description
Governors of the 50 states, Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana
Islands, and Puerto Rico. Serves as vehicle through which governors influence the
development and implementation of national policy and apply creative leadership to state
problems. Keeps the federal establishment informed of the needs and perceptions of
states. Through its Office of State Services, NGA provides a vehicle for sharing
information on innovative programs among the states and providing technical assistance to
governors on a wide range of issues. The Center for Policy Research assists by undertaking
demonstration projects and providing research on important policy issues. Conducts
research programs; compiles statistics. Information Literacy Goals, Areas of Interest, Publications, Standards, etc.
