Mission Statement
PLA's priority concerns are:
- Adequate funding for public libraries.
- Improved management of public libraries.
- Recognition of the importance of all library staff members in providing quality public
service.
- Recruitment, education, training, and compensation of public librarians.

- Improved access to library resources.
- Effective communication with the nonlibrary world.
Organizational Background/Description
A division of the American Library Association. Librarians, trustees,
and friends of libraries interested in the general improvement and expansion
of public library services to readers of all ages. Plans programs
on current public library issues and concerns; develops and distributes
publications for public librarians; compiles and disseminates statistics
on public libraries and public library service. Conducts research;
provides continued education program for public librarians; represents
the library profession at national levels. Maintains 60 committees,
including: Intellectual Freedom; International Relations; Multilingual
Library Services; Planning Process; Research; Technology.
